War Room
1983 - 2004I began drawing and painting at a very young age.
During the early years of my adolescence in Beirut (1968–1973), drawing became a necessity. On the days when school was cancelled because of curfews, drawing compulsively while listening to music was probably my way of processing the violence that increasingly surrounded my new environment.
We drew tanks—often stationed at strategic points throughout the city—machine-gun firefights, psychedelic flowers and fighter jets. Those were the years leading up to the Lebanese Civil War. Beirut was experiencing sporadic clashes, although the city had not yet been bombed.
In the Middle East—and indeed throughout much of the world—injustice and violence seem like a fish relentlessly devouring its own tail. Sadly, for this reason, the drawings and paintings that I group under the title War Room have continued to grow.
